2016 Accomplishments

2016 has been a year of great accomplishments for Georgia Federation of Democratic Women although showered with mixed emotions because of the outcome of our Presidential election. As Democrats, we share common values that support our families, our country and issues that matter most to women. We continue to support our Democratic leaders that work to advance progress for women.  And we will fight against the many initiatives that the Trump Administration will be proposing over the next four years.

In 2016 we held activities on a statewide basis and in our local chapter that supported these ideas and values. Following are some of these activities:

  • Monthly – We are working nonstop towards Atlanta serving as the Host City for the 2017 National Federation of Democratic Women’s Annual Convention.
  • February – Women in Blue Day – Recognition at the State Capitol spending time with legislators and the House Minority Leader, Stacey Abrams.
  • In March and throughout the rest of the year we worked tirelessly on the presidential and local campaigns lobbying for and against legislation that make sense. We also launched several voter outreach drives statewide registering thousands of Georgians.
  • March – Purchased and filled tables at the Democratic Party of Georgia State Dinner.
  • April – Annual Spring Awards Luncheon in Atlanta
  • June – Made a presentation during the “Call to Convention” at the National Federation of Democratic Women’s Annual Convention in Charleston, SC. and we were awarded the honor!
  • September – Launched Women’s Wednesday’s phone banking for Democratic candidates and legislation simultaneously around the state until Election Day.
  • October – Hosted 1st Annual Fall Luncheon in Atlanta.and at the Sweet Auburn Festival disseminating information on Amendment 1 and our candidates educating thousands of festival goers.
  • November – Worked diligently on the Presidential campaign with canvassing and phone calls right up until election day.

In addition, locally there were far more activities hosted by various county chapters that touched thousands of Georgians through hosting town hall meetings, candidate meet-and-greets, concerts in the park, voter registrations, voter outreach at the State Fair, Pancake Breakfast meetings, churches, senior centers, shopping centers, grocery stores, football games, and school campuses, while we continued to phone bank in coffee shops, living rooms, and conference rooms, issued Resolutions, and taking some of our efforts to the streets through sign-waving, canvassing, walking and talking throughout communities with direct contact discussing issues and concerns. Through all of the hard work a major success was the defeat of Amendment 1, which would have led to the State takeover of our public schools.

We are paving the way for other strong Democratic leadership!  While 2016 was exciting, 2017 will be a time to organize and strategize and prepare for the Gubernatorial and presidential elections. I invite you to join the blue wave of Democratic women that are willing to stand and make a difference for all Georgians.
